US ambassador to Pakistan Richrad W Olson Saturday called on Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan to discuss a single-point agenda – the anti-government sit-in against ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) for alleged rigging in the 2013 general elections.
In the aftermath of PTI sit-in in mid-August, Ambassador Olson, had announced full support to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif government that earned the ire of Imran Khan, who questioned the envoy: “Mr Olson, will you [still] accept [the results], if 80 percent of US Senate elections are rigged?”. After the passage of three months the US envoy along with his political counsellor, rushed to his grand Banigala residence situated on the hilltop, to know how the PML-N rigged the polls.
Well-placed sources privy to the meeting between Imran and Olson told Business Recorder that the ambassador was briefed on how the mandate of the people was stolen. Some documents “proving” PML-N’s involvement in vote rigging were also handed over to the envoy, they added. They said that the ambassador was also briefed about the upcoming grand PTI rally on November 30 but with a clear-cut stance that the party will not call off the sit-in unless the persons involved in the vote rigging are brought to book.
According to PTI spokesperson Dr Shireen Mazari, this meeting was scheduled upon the request of the US ambassador. She said that Khan told Olson about the party’s stance in relation to vote rigging in the elections. She also said that Olson was told that the November 30 rally would be historic and peaceful. Other matters of mutual political interests were discussed in the meeting, she said. She further said the meeting was also attended by senior vice-chairman of PTI Shah Mehmood Qureshi and American political counsellor.
PTI SIT-IN Later addressing his party sit-in at D-Chowk, Imran reiterated that the sit-in will continue till the resignation of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. He said the government must not think that PTI would call off the strike under any sort of pressure. “We know the government is trying to linger on the issue so that they could escape the punishment but let me tell them that we will get justice by bringing all those involved in stealing the mandate to book,” he added. “We’ll not move an inch from here unless we get justice and that is resignation of Nawaz Sharif…be ready for November 30 as the rulers are making every move to block the tsunami but they will not succeed,” he added.
