ISLAMABAD: All new SIMs are being issued through biometric verification system (BVS) across the country since August 1 to ensure their issuance to genuine users, said a Pakistan Telecom Authority (PTA) spokesman on Friday.
He said the PTA had conducted many surveys regarding efficiency and user-friendliness of new system, which found that the system had been helpful in issuance of new SIMs to the legitimate users.
The system in the first phase, he said, was introduced in Karachi and the province of Balochistan on December 31, 2013 and in the second phase, biometric verification devices were installed all across the country. All new SIMs, he said, were now being issued under the new system.
Regarding old SIMs, he said a lengthy exercise had been carried out to correct the data of their users through National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA). All the SIMs were registered with Computerized National Identity Cards (CNICs) and it was now wrong to say that illegal SIMs were in use, he added.
The spokesman said on the PTA’s directives, mobile phone companies had already blocked all such SIMs, which were activated through the previous process but were not being used for some time. All such SIMs would be activated only through BVS, he added.
