We need to maximally invest in our children as they are the future of our country and completely capable of leading the country and especially Karachi towards peace which is the main objective of campaign “I am Karachi.” Commissioner Karachi, Shoaib Ahmad Siddiqui, said this while sharing his thoughts at the Universal Children’s Day Celebration which was held here today in support of the peace campaign “I am Karachi.”
The Universal Children’s Day Celebration was organized by the Society for International Education (SIE) in accordance with the Universal Children’s Day celebrated on November 20 every year. SIE, as one of the key partners, dedicated the event to “I am Karachi”which is a city-wide peace campaign by civil society organizations and concerned individual sin response to long-running issues of violence and instability in Karachi.The aim of “I am Karachi” is to promote peace in Karachi through a wide-range of activities and initiatives for the city and its people and the celebration was a part of these activities.
The chief guest, Shoaib Ahmad Siddiqui, said, “I am proud to see children of Karachi celebrating Universal Children’s Day and gathering for the cause of peaceful city under “I am Karachi” banner.He congratulated SIE and all partners for initiating the campaign to reclaim the peaceful Karachi.He also mentioned Malala Yousufzai and Late Arfa Kareem Randhawa as role models for the children and urged them to follow their footsteps.
General Secretary SIE, Farah Kamal, in her speech said that SIE is proud to be associated with “I am Karachi” and knows the importance of children’s role in propagating peace. There could be no better day than Universal Children’s Day to pronounce unity for one-agenda i.e. Peaceful Karachi.
The Universal Children’s Day celebrations witnessed the participation of over 500 students from 100 different schools of Karachi. The entire program was dedicated to the theme of Peaceful Karachi as students participated in different competitions and all were based on the theme.
There was a Peaceful Karachi Art Exhibition where paintings by different students were displayed on the walls all around, portraying Karachi as a city in need of peace.Some students read and recited essays and poems on peaceful Karachi while some participated in the ‘Oration – Peaceful Karachi for Me’ where children explained how they want to see their city in future.
A brief workshop on peaceful education was also organized where participants learned the importance of education and how they can utilize education as a tool to promote peace.The students also actively participated in the panel discussion where they shared ideas how Karachi can become a peaceful city once again and realized the importance of their role in achieving the goal.
Shoaib Ahmad Siddiqui also distributed shields to the outstanding students for supporting the objective of “I am Karachi” through their essays, poems and paintings. The event concluded at the Declaration of Peaceful Karachi in which all participants wrote peace message on the peace walls and declared to work for peaceful Karachi.
