KARACHI: Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology (FUUAST) is celebrating its 12th anniversary this November with repeated demands by its teachers and students to strengthen Urdu as medium of instruction in larger interest of youth pertaining to all parts of the country.
Senior teacher of the university, Prof. Seema Naz Siddiqui, addressing a session organized to mark the occasion, chaired by Senator. Abdul Haseeb Khan, said the university that was upgraded from a college to university in 2002 has in a short span of time established its relevance.
It is during past 11 years that we have gained recognition for our capacities through setting up of departments that either till date do not exist in vast majority of the universities in the country but are also conceptually new.
While specifically referring to internationally recognized Lab of Pendrochronoly at FUUAST’s Botany Department, she also mentioned establishment of Sports Science, Bio -Technology and other new departments at FUUAST during past 11 years besides being the first general university of the country that through its law department has also produced M.Phil and Ph.Ds.
“In fact, our focus since very beginning was to promote post graduate level education and research work in the national language”, said Dr.Seema Naz Siddiqui.
She mentioned that presently 198 students are registered with the university for M.Phil programs in different subjects and another 102 for Ph.Ds.
Dr. Siddiqui said the faculty members and students through its three campuses, eight faculties, more than 50 departments 400 plus teaching staff are committed to turn true the dream of Baba e Urdu, Moulvi Abdul Haq who single handedly established Urdu College with the mission to promote urdu as sole medium of education in the country and help avoid class based educational system.
She mentioned that while FUUAST Vice Chancellor, Dr. Zafar Iqbal could not attend the session that coincided with a seminar on Flood – Disaster or Opportunity, due to his official engagement in Islamabad, however, has sent his message to the students and teachers to help people realize that no nation can gain progress without relying on its national language.
Dr. Zafar Iqbal particularly referred to achievements made in science and technology alongwith modern day research by China and Iran through their respective national languages.
Prof. Faheem uddin, Registrar of the University also addressed the session.
