KARACHI: Since the formation of tropical cyclone Nilofar, Pakistan Navy has taken a number of initiatives and is ready with requisite assets to provide assistance to the inhabitants of coastal areas of Sindh & Balochistan in case of any emergency.

In this context, Pakistan Navy is closely monitoring the situation round the clock and rendering all out assistance to local administrations of coastal areas likely to be affected, taking other precautionary measures and issuance of warnings through Joint Maritime Information and Coordination Centre (JMICC), said an official press release issued here on Wednesday.

Pakistan Navy is also ready to extend all possible assistance in the aftermath of cyclone. Emergency Response Centres along the coast have also been activated to render necessary assistance to local administration and inhabitants of coastal areas.

At present, severe tropical cyclone Nilofar has intensified into very severe cyclone over North Indian ocean located at 18.50N 620E (870 Kms Southwest of Karachi) with maximum surface winds of 105 knots gusting to 130 knots. Cyclone Nilofar has moved North Northeast in the past 12 hours and is likely to continue moving North Northeast for the next 12 hrs.

It may then curve North East towards Indian Coast and coastal areas of lower Sindh.

The cyclone landfall may occur by 01 a.m. on Nov 14. As the system would come closer to the coastal areas of Pakistan and India, the overall strength is expected to weaken and the maximum sustained wind speeds would also reduce.

Under the influence of this cyclone, widespread rain/thundershowers with isolated heavy/very heavy falls accompanied by strong gusty winds are expected in lower Sindh including Karachi and coastal areas of Balochistan from Wednesday (night) to Friday.

The sea conditions along Pakistan coast would be rough to very rough from Wednesday to Friday.

The fishermen of Sindh and Balochistan have been warned not to venture into open sea from Wednesday to Friday.

The fishermen who are already in the open sea have been informed to return to coast immediately.
