KARACHI: Abdul Sattar Edhi, the renowned social worker of the country here on Wednesday, inaugurated the Transplant cum Operation Theater Complex, dedicated to him and Bilquis Edhi at Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT).
Edhi on the occasion said he throughout his life had served humanity without any discrimination on basis of cast, colour, creed, ethnicity, language or religion.
About the contribution for completion of the O.T. Complex at SIUT made by Edhi Trust, he said this was for the people suffering from organ failure with little resources to get required treatment at any private facility due to high treatment expenditure.
Appreciative of the high quality of service provided at SIUT to the patients, bulk of whom comprised resourceless individuals, Abdul Sattar Edhi was optimistic that the O.T complex will be of help to thousands of needy and ailing patients.
“This complex will facilitate them to get their transplant done free and with dignity,” he said.
SIUT Director, Prof. Adibul Hasan Rizvi said the complex, a dedicated and purpose built facility, exclusively for performing living and deceased organ transplantation surgeries, has been built with the generous support of Edhi family.
It has been named after the two humanitarians of the country Abdul Sattar Edhi and Bilquis Edhi as the spirit behind SIUT work is synonymous to the commitment of the two personalities towards their cause of service to humanity.
Dr. Rizvi lauded the benevolent gesture of Edhi family’s support for the project and said the complex will be of immense value and benefit to the kidney failure population of the country.
“SIUT is most grateful to them providing a perpetual source of a most modern and high tech transplantation surgical facility, he said.
Referring to the recent dacoity incident at the Edhi Foundation, Dr. Rizvi said that it reflected the pathetic and deplorable decline in societal values that even people like Edhi Sahab have also not been spared from such nefarious activities.
He said society has emerged to be in a fragmented and degenerated state; human values are frequently violated without any fear and in these circumstances, few people like Mr. and Mrs. Edhi shine like beacons who have selflessly dedicated their entire lives for uplifting humanity.
They have taken community work, social welfare services and compassion to a newer level, said Prof. Adib ul Hasan Rizvi.
Earlier Prof. Manzoor Hussain giving an overview of the facility said the Edhi Transplant Operation Theater Complex comprises of five operating rooms, 6 bedded ICU and recovery, patient holding area, and a central sterile supply department (CSSD).
He said complex has also been equipped with state of art Laminar Air Flow System recommended for transplantation surgery ensuring sterility and hygiene of the internal environment of the theater.
On the occasion Bilquis Edhi and Faisal Edhi (son of the couple) were also present as the guests of honour.
