ISLAMABAD: Chairman Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC) Dr.Iftikhar Ahmad has said that Wheat Productivity Enhancement Programme (WPEP) has provided an opportunity of global science in Pakistan.
He said the WPEP providing funds, training of young scientists and infrastructure development of agriculture, according to press release issued.
Chairman Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC),Dr.Iftikhar Ahmad said this while addressing on the occasion of inauguration session of two day Annual Wheat Planning/Wheat Productivity Enhancement Program (WPEP) Annual Review Meeting 2014 at here National Agricultural Research Centre (NARC) Islamabad.
He said that research institutions to improve wheat, maize and other crops production.
Dr. Iftikhar said the scientists introduce new innovations and crop varieties to enhance agricultural production for food security in Pakistan.
He added that Progressive farmers of the country directory should be prepared for close coordination, exchange of new knowledge and innovations.
Scientists and Policy makers work for water storage for Pakistan’s future agriculture,he said.
Dr Iftikhar Ahmad said that in future policy makers and progressive farmers should also be invited in such meetings to set future priorities.
He said we should work more for the better agronomic management practices to get the maximum wheat crop production.
Dr Iftikhar also highlighted the importance of better utilization of Rodkohi water.
He also gave emphasis for the innovative research and development of different quality products from wheat.
On this occasion Mr. David Williams, United States Departmen of Agriculture (USDA) Agriculture Counselor and David Marshall, USDA/ARS-Plant Science Research Program have highlighted the major achievements of the WPEP Programme and ensured their full support for development of agriculture sector in Pakistan.
They said USDA is proud to continue its 50-years partnership with Pakistan.
On this occasion Dr. Shahid Masood, Member (Plant Sciences)PARC gave emphasis for the better establishment of wheat crop by adopting the better agronomic practices along with the development of new wheat cultivars.
He said with the development of new wheat varieties, it is hoped that this planning meeting will be helpful in getting the more production of wheat crop during the cropping season 2014-15.
Dr. Muhammad Imtiaz, CLO CIMMYT, presented the progress / achievements of WPEP Programme.
Dr Abdul Majid from ICARDA gave the presentation regarding the agronomic achievements of the Program whereas Dr. Atiq-ur-Rehman Rattu, National Coordinator (Wheat) PARC highlighted coordination and NUWRT results and research and extension activities of the Program.
On this occasion, Dr. Qadir Bux Baloch, Ex-ADC / Harvest Plus activities, Dr. Makhdoom, Director (WRI) Faisalabad, Dr. Nazir, Director NIA Tandojam, Dr. Masood, Director CCRI Pirsabadk, Dr. Anjum, DG Agri Extension, Dr. Karim Bakhsh Laghari, Director (WRI) Sakrand, Dr. Fida Muhammad, Agri University Peshawar, Dr. Shafique Khawaja, Director Agriculture AK and other scientists also addressed and shared their knowledge and experience.
The Wheat Productivity Enhancement Project (WPEP) is an $11.5 million dollar project funded by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).
The project is in its fourth year. The project implementers are the International Maize and Wheat Center (CIMMYT) and the International Centre for Agricultural Research in Dry Areas (ICARDA) and the Pakistani partners are the Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC) and provincial research institutions, including Ayub Agricultural Research Institute (AARI).
