Ramps, pedestrian bridges on all major thoroughfares in Karachi

KARACHI: The Commissioner of Karachi, Shoaib Ahmad Siddiqui and KMC Administrator, Rauf Akhter Farooqui have agreed to facilitate each other in construction of pedestrian bridges, on adequate distances, at all major thoroughfares in the city.

In a meeting organized Tuesday, to review traffic and sanitation improvement work underway on major thoroughfares, it was agreed that these pedestrian bridges for citizens in general will also have ramp provision for special citizens.

The meeting held at Commissioner Office decided that this project would be accomplished, within stipulated time period, in close coordination with established private companies, mainly multi- nationals.

Representative of Commander Karachi (COMKAR), Commander Rizwan Ahmed, RTA secretary and Deputy Commissioner (Traffic), Manshad Ali, Director, Local Government, Rubina Asif, Additional Deputy Commissioner (East), Syed Junaid Ahmad, Assistant Commissioner (Saddar), Sajjad Abro, TelenorPakistan’s representative, Lt. Col (retd), Arif Baig and officals from traffic police, Clifton cantonment board, DMCs East and South were also present on the occasion.

Commissioner of Karachi said the private companies involved in the construction of the pedestrian bridges projects would also be expected to adopt these so that necessary maintenance is also ensured.

These private companies as a compensation would be allowed to use these facilities for display of their publicity material, mainly hoardings and bill boards.

Telenor’s representative said his comapany under its corporate social responsibility (CSR) program is committed to assist government in all public welfare schemes and projects.

Shoaib Ahmad Siddiqui appreciative of this gesture said plantation, road repair, improved traffic flow, better sewerage system are provisions that could be markedly improved through close coordination between all concerned agencies as well as private companies under their CSR programs.

The commissioner said there was urgent need to bring about improvment in matters related to safety maintenance and other important traffic issues on Lucky Star, Dalmia, Gizri, Sharah e Faisal and Karsaz etc.

He expressed his serious reservations about the traffic chaos witnessed on the Dalmia and Millenium Mall inter-section.

Commissioner Siddiqui sought detailed reports from concerned officials about raod improvement plans made by them for their respective areas of jurisdiction.
