ATHARA HAZARI: Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif Saturday visited the flood-hit Athara Hazari village to examine relief and rehabilitation work in the area.
During the visit, he inspected a relief camp in the area and also interacted with the flood affected people.
Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister said he would not rest until the flood-hit people were fully rehabilitated and both the federal and provincial governments would fully support them in this hour of need.
He said the government would extend maximum support to the flood-hit people to compensate their loss of houses, crops and cattle.
The Prime Minister said supporting the flood-stricken population was not a favor to them rather it was the government’s obligation to help them cope with the difficulties.
He said the flood-affected areas had already been declared as calamity-hit and lauded the courage of the affected population.
He said such a flood in the Chenab River was unprecedented. It was, however, laudable that the affected people were raising slogans of ‘Long Live Pakistan’ even in the hour of distress.
Nawaz Sharif recalled that he, Shahbaz Sharif and Ghulam Haider Wayne had also visited the area during 1992 flood and assured that the government would go side by side with them till their complete rehabilitation.
He appreciated the services of civil administration, police, armed forces personnel and civilians for rescuing the people from deep waters and distributing relief items among them.
“This passion of public service in this difficult time is appreciable. I hope they will continue showing this devotion until people get deliverance from it,” he remarked.
He said the displaced people were being provided food and medication, while fodder was being supplied for cattle.
He said after the flood water receded, losses to houses, crops and cattle would be assessed and then disbursement of compensation among the affected people would start.
The Prime Minister said the government had intimated the people three to four days before the flood and they were evacuated through boats and helicopters.
He expressed sorrow that two persons had lost lives in Athara Hazari. Earlier, the district coordination officer Jhang briefed the Prime Minister about the relief operation, and loss to houses and crops caused by the floods.
