KARACHI: National Defence Day celebrations marked their beginning here Saturday with a change of guards’ ceremony at Mazar-e- Quaid as a contingent comprising 96 smartly attired cadets of Pakistan Air Force Academy – Risalpur assumed their responsibilities to guard the mazar.
The young cadets including four women presented guard of honour before taking upon their responsibility for the day, with Air Vice-Marshal, Asim Zaheer as the chief guest on the occasion.
AVM Zaheer laid a floral wreath on behalf of PAF and offered fateha at the mazar.
The impressive ceremony was also witnessed by a number of citizens.
Government schools, that remain open on Saturdays too, also arranged special programmes to pay homage to the martyrs who laid their lives for safeguarding the territory of the country over the years.
Students sang national songs and participated in speech contest highlighting role of soldiers in the wars fought in 1948, 1965 and 1971besides countering terrorists since 1990s till date.
Special prayers were also held at different mosques in the city for the martyrs of the country and for national stability and unity.
