ISLAMABAD: Turkey has condemned last week’s attack on a mosque in Iraq’s Diyala province that killed 73 people.
The attack, during Friday prayers in the village of Imam Wais, saw a suicide bomber detonate a vehicle laden with explosives before gunman started shooting.
The attack on the Sunni Muslim mosque has been blamed on Shiite militiamen, Anadolu News Agency Reported.
In a statement, Turkey’s Foreign Ministry said: “The attack on this holy place is aimed at apparently igniting a sectarian fight in Iraq, where a new political structure is soon set to begin.”
It is feared the rising sectarian violence in Iraq could upset Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi’s attempts to form a unity government and bring Iraq’s various factions together to combat the threat from the Islamic State.
