RAWALPINDI:City district health department arranged a seminar to create awareness regarding the importance of breastfeeding
for both mother and child here on Monday at district health office Khaban-e-sirsyed.
Executive District Officer (EDO- Health) Dr Zafar Iqbal Gondal while speaking on the occasion said that about 60 per cent of new mothers
give their babies water or other beverages which leads to infections in the newborns, sometimes resulting in their death. He advised the
mothers to breastfeed their newborns at least for the first six months.
Gondal said lady health workers would go door-to-door under the campaign being launched from the next week to educate women about
their health and taking preventive measures specially during pregnancy, delivery and for infant’s health.
In his address,EDO, underlined the importance of holding such seminars in order to create community awareness about breastfeeding.District health programme officer Dr Javaid Iqbal ch in his address informed that mother’s milk is not only safe,provides immunity against infections, but also is non-allergic and easy to digest.
As the infant grows, he said, the composition of mother’s milk too changes, thus maintaining a perfect balance of nutrients.
