The rupee firmly held the commanding position against the dollar on the currency market on Thursday, dealers said. The rupee recovered seven-paisa versus the dollar for buying at Rs 98.25 and it also gained five-paisa for selling at Rs 98.30, they said.
INTERBANK MARKET RATES: OPEN MARKET RATES: The rupee followed the same pattern in terms of dollar for buying and selling at Rs 99.65 and Rs 99.85 respectively. In contrast, the rupee drifted lower against the euro, losing 25-paisa for buying Rs 135.25 and it also lost 75-paisa for selling at Rs 135.50 and Rs 135.00, they said.
In the fourth Asian trade, the US dollar wallowed at its lowest in nearly two weeks against a basket of major currencies early on Thursday, having beat a hasty retreat after the Federal Reserve signalled that interest rates will stay low for a while yet.
New projections suggested the Fed saw rates rising a bit more in 2015 and 2016 than it previously forecast, but officials lowered their long-term rate target.
The dollar was available at Rs 59.98 versus the Indian rupee, the greenback was at 3.2190 in terms of the Malaysian ringgit and the US currency was available at 6.2268 in relation to the Chinese yuan. RUPEE IN LAHORE: The dollar-rupee parity remained unchanged on the local currency markets on Thursday.
According to the currency dealers, the dollar was opened on a negative sign amid lackluster condition. At close of trading, the dollar was traded at Rs 99.65 and Rs 99.90 as its buying and selling rates against same overnight rate.
On the other hand, the rupee showed weakness and depreciated its worth against the pound sterling. The pound was purchased and sold at Rs 168.90 and Rs 169.50 against the day earlier closing of Rs 168.75 and Rs 169.00, respectively, the dealers said.
RUPEE IN ISLAMABAD AND RAWALPINDI: The rupee remained firm against the dollar on the open currency markets of Islamabad and Rawalpindi here on Thursday.
The dollar opened at Rs 98.50 (buying) and Rs 98.60 (selling) against same last rate. It did not observe further change in the second session and closed at Rs 98.50 (buying) and Rs 98.60 (selling).
Pound Sterling opened at Rs 165 (buying) and Rs 165.50 (selling) against same last rate. It closed at the same rate without further change by the end of evening session.
