Govt set to start work on Diamer Bhasha dam

ISLAMABAD: The Diamer-Bhasha Dam project is a lifeline for the national economy, which would help meet country’s future agricultural and power requirements.

PML-N government is ready to start construction work of the dam in near future and has allocated Rs. 15 billion in the budget of 2014-15 for acquisition of land for the dam.

An official of the Ministry of Water and Power said on Friday the Dam had three important objectives, which include flood- mitigation, power generation and storage of water.

Replying to a question, he said the gigantic project would generate 4,500 MW of electricity and store over 4.7 million acre feet (MAF) of water to meet the country’s growing power and irrigation needs.
