THE RUPEE: dollar gains

The rupee could not stand with its counterpart (US dollar) on the local currency market on Tuesday, dealers said. A slight rise in the dollars’ demand forced the rupee to drop its appreciation, losing 24-paisa for buying at Rs 98.40 and 26-paisa for selling at Rs 98.44, dealers said.

INTER-BANK MARKET RATES: OPEN MARKET RATES: While the rupee was unmoved in terms of the dollar for buying and selling at Rs 99.45 and Rs 99.65, the said. The rupee adopted the same path, depicting no visible change versus the euro for buying and selling at Rs 137.25 and Rs 137.50, they said.

In the second Asian trade, the South Korean won hit a fresh six-year high leading gains among emerging Asian currencies, though many investors remained cautious ahead of major events this week including a US Federal Reserve policy meeting.

The dollar was trading against the Indian rupee at Rs 60.49, the greenback was at 3.2610 in terms of Malaysian ringgit and the US currency was available at 6.2577 versus the Chinese yuan. RUPEE IN LAHORE: The national currency remained under pressure, as it lost 10-paisa against the US dollar on the local currency market on Tuesday.

According to the currency dealers, the dollar was opened on a healthy note and registered gains following fresh buying. At close of trading, the dollar was ended higher at Rs 99.50 and Rs 99.75 on buying and selling counter against Rs 99.40 and Rs 99.65 of Monday, respectively, the dealers said.

Similarly, the rupee failed to maintain upward slide and was depreciated against the British pound. The pound was purchased and sold at Rs 167.00 and Rs 167.25, compared with overnight closing of Rs 166.75 and Rs 167.00, respectively, they added.

RUPEE IN ISLAMABAD AND RAWALPINDI: The rupee remained firm against the dollar on the open currency markets of Islamabad and Rawalpindi here on Tuesday.

The dollar opened at Rs 98.50 for buying and Rs 98.60 for selling against same last rate. It did not observe further change in the second session and closed at Rs 98.50 for buying and Rs 98.60 for selling.

Pound Sterling opened at Rs 165 (buying) and Rs 165.50 (selling) against same last rate. It closed at the same rate without further change by the end of evening session.
