Election boycott campaign picks up momentum in IOK

ISLAMABAD: The forum patronized by the veteran Hurriyet leader, Syed Ali Gilani, has urged the people not to cast their votes in the ongoing farcical polls to honour the sacrifice of the Kashmiri martyrs.

The forum leaders including Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai, Ghulam Nabi Sumjhi, Muhammad Rafiq Ganai, Muhammad Yousuf Mir, Peer Saifullah and Raja Meraj-ud-Din addressed public gatherings at different places in the territory as part of the ongoing election boycott campaign,KMS reported.

They appealed to the people to completely boycott the sham polls and said that those who were casting votes were placing the chain of slavery in the necks of their coming generations.

They said although the pro-India parties like National Conference, Poeples Democratic Party (PDP) and Congress were asking votes for water, electricity and roads, but New Delhi was using these votes as a political weapon to prolong its control over the territory.

Meanwhile, the spokesman of the forum in a statement said that the Indian police arrested Hurriyet leaders and activists, Abdul Ahad Parra, Ghulam Muhammad Khan Sopori, Muhammad Maqbool Kondu and Abdul Rasheed Butt at Lasipora in Pulwama when they were on their way to South Kashmir to carry out election boycott campaign. He said that Bashir Ahmad Soleh and Ghulam Muhammad Bangi were arrested in Baramulla.

The spokesman strongly condemned the arrests by the police. He said that as the dates of election drama in the Kashmir Valley were coming closer the police were tightening grip around the pro-freedom leadership and activists, who were not being allowed to reach the public.
