ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Information, Broadcasting and National Heritage, Pervaiz Rashid on Saturday said that democracy is a prerequisite for the stability and security of Pakistan.
In a statement, he said, however, democracy cannot flourish if there is no independence of media.
Minister said that independence of media can not be secured unless the journalists are given protection in the performance of their professional functions.
It was the commitment of Prime Minister of Pakistan to freedom of expression when he emphasized on taking Wali Khan Baber’s case as a test case, he said.
It were the 1999 amendments in anti-terrorism laws, which paved the way for the smooth running of the case, the minister asserted.
Pervaiz Rashid said that the present democratic government of Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) is determined to ensure safety to the journalists and provide security to every Pakistani.
He said that the government would leave no stone unturned to make Pakistan a peaceful, secured and a stable state.
