ISLAMABAD: The veteran Hurriyet leader, Syed Ali Gilani has said that the youth, Muhammad Shafi Sheikh, was shot dead by Indian troops in a staged encounter.
Syed Ali Gilani in a statement issued in Srinagar said the martyred man was captured by troops and was subsequently killed in custody in Sopore, media reported.
Quoting locals the veteran leader said, “Mohammad Shafi Sheikh of Zaloora was arrested by SOG and 22-RR and then murdered in custody. The troops then cunningly staged a fake encounter to hide this murder.”
He demanded an independent investigation into this fake encounter. “It is the responsibility of the local human rights activists and organizations to investigate this inhuman act,” he added.
Shafi was killed on Sunday by Indian Army’s 22 Rashtriya Rifles in Seelu village of Sopore.
“The custodial killings and fake encounters have become a routine for the last 25 years and nothing has been done to stop the menace,” he said.
