ISLAMABAD: Minister for Planning and Development, Professor Ahsan Iqbal on Saturday called for initiating criminal proceedings against those who are involved in corruption and plundering the public funds and money.
He said due to lack of consultancy services, professionalism and managerial expertise, cost of different developmental projects was increasing which ultimately affects the national economy.
He expressed these views during his visit to the under construction block of Pak-Secretariat here and inspected the quality, and pace of work.
He also directed the department concerned to ensure completion of work within minimum possible time.
He stressed the need for formulating special judicial policy to deal with people involved in corruption, mismanagement, malpractice and harming the national exchequer.
Ahsan Iqbal said that it was a matter of grave concern that those who embezzled billions of rupees were moving freely without facing legal consequences.
He also called upon the executive to play its due role and act against those corrupt elements who have awarded the tenders to incompetent firms causing wastage of billions of rupees.
He said that the estimated construction cost of new Pak-Secretariat building was about Rs. 1.25 billion which have swollen to over Rs. 3.25 billion owing to alleged corruption and mismanagement.
The Minister said that the review of developmental projects had pointed out that 50 percent of the allocated amount was allegedly embezzled and in some cases it was over 90 percent.
Ahsan Iqbal said that construction work of Pak-Secretariat would be completed within 6 months and all ministries and divisions functioning in rented buildings would be shifted in the new building to save millions of rupee per month.
He said that solar panels would be installed for electrification of the building from the alternative energy source and save the power.
Earlier, Chief Engineer briefed the Minister about the construction work and informed that about 90 percent of work has been completed.
