Activists of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) held demonstrations to block Nato supply routes in various areas of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP) on Sunday. The PTI workers blocked Nato supply routes in Peshawar, Nowshera, Swabi, Khairabad, and D I Khan. Clashes between PTI workers and drivers were also reported as they forcibly searched every truck on various routes in the province.
After an impressive show against US drone attacks in Peshawar on Saturday, PTI and allied parties had worked out a plan, for staging sit-ins in six districts of the province, including Peshawar, Nowshera, Charsadda, Bannu, Kohat, Karak, and D.I.Khan.
In Peshawar, activists of PTI forcibly stopped trucks on Ring Road, near Hayatabad, and staged sit-in there, to stop Nato containers via this route. The main Hayatabad road was sealed off by placing barbed wires. Angry protesters were forcefully searching trucks which sparked clashes between drivers and the demonstrators. However, the sources said no action was taken against those people taking the law into their hands during the anti-US drones demonstrations and ‘sit-ins’. Due to protests and demonstrations, the Afghan transit trade was also affected as supply of transit goods, comprising of food and non-food items, through local carriers, bonded to Afghanistan remains suspended for the last three days.
Similarly, hundreds of PTI members held a sit-in in Dera Ismail Khan, blocking Nato supply routes to Afghanistan.
A few supporters also stopped trucks, assuming they were carrying ‘Nato supplies’ and a fight broke out between the truck drivers and PTI supporters. The truck drivers, however, claimed that they were transporting clothes as a part of the Afghan transit trade.
PTI activists also staged sit-in Swabi, Charssada, Bannu and Kohat. During yesterday protest rally, PTI chief Imran Khan said that his party will continue sit-ins till assurance by US, that it will not carry out more drones strikes in Fata and KP. He further said the Nato supplies would remain suspend for indefinite period.
