PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Government has planned seven gigantic projects for uplift of social welfare sector with special focus on construction of rehabilitation centres for drug addicts, welfare and education complexes to bring the marginalized and deprived communities into national mainstream of life.
In order to provide better medical treatment to drugs addicts in a congenial atmosphere, the government has planned construction of Drug Addicts Rehabilitation Centre and Darul Kafala in Peshawar that would be completed with an estimated cost of Rs.58.500 million.
Official sources in Civil Secretariat told APP that 20 million would be spent on this project in current fiscal year. He said drug addiction was a social issue that could be addressed with support of family, creating employment opportunities and regular treatment to the addicts.
Construction of social welfare complex in Bannu is another new project that would be completed in two years, he said, adding total cost of the project is Rs.45million against which Rs.35 million were allocated for current fiscal year. In addition to rehabilitation services, focus would be made on treatment and recreational facilities to drug addicts in the Centre.
For good transportation facilities, he said, an access road from main road to social welfare complex at Chakdara Lower Dir would be constructed with an estimated cost of Rs 6 million.
In addition to construction of building for special education institutes at Haripur costing Rs 42 million and construction of boundary wall around social welfare complex Abbottabad costing Rs 3 million, he said, efforts would be made for purchase of land for establishment of Special Education School with special children teacher training school Swat, Malakand division.
These projects were reflected in the Annual Development Programme 2013-14 after extensive consultation with all the stakeholders. He said these projects would be completed with an estimated cost of Rs.209.500 million against which Rs.78 million would be spent in current fiscal year.
He said work on establishment of 25 handicrafts centres in KP would continue for which ten million rupees would be spent in current fiscal year, adding efforts would be made to complete the ongoing projects including establishment of halfway house for women at Peshawar, setting up of Darul Aman at Swabi and working of women hostel at Hayatabad Peshawar and establishment of vocational centres in KP on time.
He said that we need to treat drug users as victims rather than criminals.
To eliminate drug addiction from society, he said, awareness campaigns through mass media, essay contests, lectures and declamation contest in schools, colleges and universities should be run in order to create awareness about the ill effects of drug addiction.
