ISLAMABAD: In a letter to the Supreme Court, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Wednesday proposed new dates for local body polls in cantonment boards an all four provinces, media reported.
The letter was written to ECP Additional Secretary Sher Afghan in which he suggested to the apex court that 18 Jan 2014 and Jan 30 be fixed respectively for Sindh and Punjab local body elections.
He proposed that any date in Feb could be fixed for elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and cantonment boards, whereas Dec 7, as directed by the Supreme Court, should remain unchanged.
Meanwhile, the court admitted today for hearing a review petition of the ECP seeking postponement of local government polls.
A three-member bench led by Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry will be taking up the petition today to finalize the dates.
The court later issued notices to Advocates Generals and Attorney General of Pakistan to submit federal and provincial government’s responses over the fresh ECP suggestions.
