Transporters start fleecing passengers ahead of Eid-ul-Azha

ISLAMABAD/RAWALPINDI: The arbitrary increase in fares of inter-city transport fares by the transporters is troubling the passengers, while the transport authorities have turned a blind towards the situation.

The transporters are minting inflated fares from the passengers, who have no option than to pay the extra charges to reach their home towns to spend Eid-ul-Azha with their families and friends.

Ansar Hussain, a passenger at Pirwadhai, said that the transporters have started fleecing the citizens even many days prior to the holy occasion of Eid-ul-Azha. He said that the passengers are being charged up to 50 percent extra fares but no one was there to ask the transporters. He said that the owners of buses have completely rejected the fare list made by the regional transport authorities.

Asghar Ali, another passenger at Faizabad bus stop, said that bus drivers and conductors are also taking advantage of the situation and over load the vehicles to fill their pockets with some extra money without care about the facility and lives of the passengers.

On the other hand, the transporters are of the view that they have increased the fare due to the hike in the price of petroleum products. They said that it was impossible to run the transport business on the old fares.

Meanwhile, officials of the Regional Transport Authority said that the authority has constituted special teams, which will take action against the violators of the official fare list.
