LHC directs to produce Sri Lankan team attack accused on 10th

LAHORE: A division bench of the Lahore High Court Wednesday adjourning hearing of a petition for bail cancellation of Zubair alias Naik Muhammad, accused of Sri Lankan team attack case, till October 10 and directed to produce the accused on next date of hearing.

The bench comprising Justice Shahid Hammed Dar and Justice Muhammad Yawaar Ali passed the directions on a petition filed by the Punjab Prosecution Department for bail cancellation of the accused.

As proceedings started today, Zubair’s counsel submitted that a LHC review board had denied to extend detention of the accused, on October 1, but despite it, he was not released.

However, Additional Prosecutor General (APG) Punjab Abdul Samad said that the accused was kept in custody to maintain law and order.

The court inquired about charges levelled on the accused.

The APG submitted that the detail would be presented on next date of hearing and also sought time for preparation.

The court adjourning the matter till October 10 directed police to present the accused on next date of hearing.

The prosecution department had moved the petition for bail cancellation of Zubair alias Naik Muhammad who was granted bail by the trail court. The department contended that the trial court failed to appreciate facts of the matter and gave bail to the accused.The department pleaded the court to cancel the bail granted to the accused.

The Sri Lankan cricket team attack occurred on March 3, 2009, when a bus carrying Sri Lankan cricketers, part of a larger convoy, was fired at with AK-47 rifles, rockets and hand grenades by 12 gunmen, near Liberty Square, Lahore. The cricketers were on their way to play the third day of the second test against the Pakistani cricket team.
