ISLAMABAD: President Mamnoon Hussain has said that legislation is on the cards to protect the rights of senior citizens in the country.
In a message on International Day of Older Persons being observed across the world including Pakistan on October 1, the President said a draft had been prepared for a national policy for the welfare of senior citizens. President Mamnoon said the draft was under the consideration of Ministry of Law and Justice Commission of Pakistan. He said these steps were a testimony that the government was sincere in its efforts to resolve the problems of older persons.
The President mentioned several benefits being offered to the older persons including concession in tax payment and the reduced railways and air fares.
Counters have also been designated for the senior citizens at new banks, hospitals and other institutions, he added.
He hoped that the provincial governments would follow the example of federal government and would take measures for the uplift of older persons.
The President stressed benefitting from the experience of older persons and said no society can prosper without their active participation.
He said senior citizens are a source of pride for the country and the law also protects and safeguards their rights.
He mentioned that the Islamic teachings also focus on respecting the older people.
The President said integrated family system is a blessing and a pleasant feature of this society.
