ECP a stumbling block for local bodies’ polls: SC

ISLAMABAD: Supreme Court resumed hearing of a case regarding local bodies elections and ordered to hand over the basic notification of delimitations of Punjab and Sindh to the Election Commission, with the direction that final notification should be issued after removing reservations regarding delimitation.

Additional Attorney General Shah Khawar told the court that the ordinance for local bodies elections would be released after approved by the federal cabinet.

Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry while passing his remarks said that if the government had a sincere intention, new law would have been formed within one day.

Local bodies system is of no use when it fails to deliver for the sake of common man, he said.

DG Elections Commission Shair Afghan told the court that the session of Election Commission’s committee comprising all provinces would commence tomorrow on Wednesday.

Upon this, the Chief Justice passing his remarks said that the Election Commission is putting hurdles in the way of local bodies elections.

Advocate General Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was of the view that home work on delimitations and legislation is underway. The suprme court also ordered the Advocate general balochistan to appear in the court on October 23.
