498 divorce cases in Multan in 14 months

MULTAN: As many as 498 divorces were registered in 61 union councils of tehsil Multan during the last 14 months.

According to figures obtained from the union councils pertaining to July-2012 to August this year,more incidents of divorce occurred in areas where majority of the population belonged to lower middle class or poor strata.

In Piran Ghaib union council, 43 divorces were registered during the mentioned period and Hassanabad union council remained second with 25 divorce cases.

In seven union councils,not even a single incident of divorce was registered.However,a reasonable portion of population in these union councils including Officers colony,
Muzaffarabad and other areas comprised of government servants as well as employees of different factories.

Chairperson Gender Studies Department Bahauddin Zakariya University,Azra Asghar while talking to APP informed that major reason behind the breakup of families was socio-economic problem.

She observed that some customary practices including “Watta Satta” and age differences between couples, and marriages without consent of the couple were also important reasons behind the failure of marriages.

Sajid Nadeem, a teacher at BZU Social Science Department said that initial two or three years of any marriage are very important.

Chairperson Gender Studies while suggesting solution stated that there is need to promote education as this could strengthen affinity and understanding amongst family members on various issues.

“Education helps promote the culture of tolerance in society”, she stated. She said that arbitrary councils comprising elders must also intervene to achieve reconciliation
between the families.
