Women parliamentarians express support for all women friendly policies

KARACHI: Sindh Minister for Women Development, Social Welfare and Special Education, Rubina Qaimkhani has urged women parliamentarians to develop consensus and harmony in their ranks so as to facilitate adoption of women friendly policies as full fledged laws.

The minister who is also the convener of Parliamentary Committee for Women Empowerment Sindh in a briefing to the women parliamentarians from Sindh said proper understanding was urgently required among women parliamentarians about women related bills and policy prior to their
presentation before the assembly.

Appreciative of the keen interest expressed by the committee members she said this would help the committee’s main objective that is to facilitate and coordinate in formulation of policy laws.

Rubina Qaimkhani said the Sindh Women Development Department is vigorously working for women empowerment in Sindh especially related
to their economic and legal rights.

She said that since assuming her responsibilities as the provincial minister, she has given priority to all the pending matters specially women related bills and policies.

“This is in particular context of the fact that since 18th amendment formulation of legislation on social issues is the prime responsibility of provincial government,” said provincial minister for women development.

On the occasion Bilquis Rehman from HANDS made a presentation on Child Marriage Eradication Bill, 2013 mentioning that the draft has been prepared in consultation with all the stake-holders i.e. women parliamentarians, line departments, NGOs, religious scholars, media and civil Society.

The bill proposes 18 years as the minimum marriage age for a girl.

The Minister Rubin Qaimkhani informed the women parliamentarians that after consultation with various stake-holder a clause has been added to the very bill according to which it would be mandatory upon the “Nikahkhwan” to necessarily seek CNIC of both Bride and Groom at the time of Nikah for registration.

Nikahkhwan will also responsible to mention the two CNIC numbers in Nikahnama and Copy of Nikahnama should be provided after registration of Nikah to both parties i.e bride and groom.

MPA Nusrat Sehar Abbasi, from PML (F) was of the view that thalassemia status of both bride and groom must also be mentioned in the  Nikahnama.

MPA Heer Soho said all religious scholars must be taken on board while MPA Dr Seema from PTI emphasized on proper reporting system.

Nuzhat shirin from HomeNet Pakistan briefed the women parliamentarians on the proposed draft of Provincial Policy on Home Based Worker .

All the women parliamentarians present in the meeting unanimously agreed to support it.
