KARACHI: The Muttahaida Qaumi Movement said on Friday that a statement from the US Embassy denying that 19,000 NATO containers went missing from the Karachi port proved that the party was wrongly involved in the issue.
MQM senior leader Haider Abbas Rizvi, while addressing a press conference here, said that MQM opponents tried to involve MQM leader and former ports and shipping minister Babar Ghouri.
But he said an explanatory statement from the US Embassy Islamabad proved MQM opponents wrong.
He said this baseless allegation was just like previous allegations against his party including Jinahpur conspiracy and more recently about existence of so-called Mohajir Liberation Army.
On Thursday, the US Embassy in Islamabad denied media reports that around 19,000 United States/ International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) containers were stolen from Karachi ports.
“Media suggestions that 19,000 United States/ ISAF containers were stolen, including containers that contain weapons and ammunition, are false,” the US Embassy said in the statement.
While the United States routinely uses Karachi ports for both diplomatic and military shipments, neither the United States nor ISAF has ever shipped weapons or ammunition via Karachi ports, it added.
