Nine dead as Indian hotel building collapses

NEW DELHI: A two-storeyed hotel building in India’s Secunderabad city collapsed on Monday morning killing nine people and injuring 20 others.

Many of the dead are hotel employees. The injured have been rushed to nearby hospitals. Work is on to rescue several more people trapped under the debris.

The City Light Hotel building houses a cafeteria where people come for morning tea. Although the structure is decades old, the owner had made some cosmetic repairs to pass it off as new.

According to witnesses, a kitchen set up on the building-top for the Ramzan season might have added to the pressure leading to the collapse.

“Regardless of the notices issued, several old, dilapidated buildings are still in use,” minister Danam Nagendar said. “We will see to it that such structures are razed.”
