Details of GST charged from CNG consumers required: SC

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan (SCP) has asked for details of general sales tax (GST) charged from CNG consumers over the last 6 years.

The court asked under which law an additional tax was being collected from CNG consumers.

The case was heard by a three-judge bench.

The bench asked Attorney General Munir A Malik why 26 percent tax was imposed on CNG while the maximum GST rate is at 17 percent.

The attorney general said 17 percent GST was being charged from consumers while the remaining 9 percent was collected from CNG pump owners.

The chief justice remarked that the apex court had ordered to check price hike due to the increase in GST rate. The court should be told what steps have been taken by the government in this regard.

The government has no control to check rising prices of essential items in markets.

Justice Ejaz Chaudhry said that the national exchequer was empty over corruption and that its burden should not be transferred to people.

Later, the court ruled that details of the GST charged on CNG from June 13 2007 to June 30, 2013 should be submitted. The hearing was adjourned till July 24.
