SWABI: A district and sessions judge sentenced former Member Provincial Assembly (MPA) Javed Tarakai for one year in jail and fined Rs5,000 in a case of dual-nationality on Tuesday.
Th screening of general election candidates is turning out to be the toughest in history of Pakistan. Such bold scrutiny has never taken place before in the country. Earlier on Tuesday, another former MPA Khalifa Abdul Qayyum was also sentenced to three years in jail along with a Rs5,000 penalty due to holding a fake degree.
For the very first time in Pakistan’s history, three of the country’s top institutions – State Bank of Pakistan, National Accountability Bureau and Federal Board of Revenue – will screen candidates’ backgrounds for criminal conviction, loan default, tax evasion and other financial irregularities.
