THE ROOTS OF EDUCATION ARE BITTER BUT ITS FRUIT IS SWEET
Before discussing the subject, let us first try to understand the basic concepts of education as it will eventually lead us to a better understanding of the same.
What is education?
It is defined as: The act or process of educating or being educated. Or the knowledge or skill obtained or developed by a learning process or a program of instruction of a specified kind or level or it is the field of study that is concerned with the pedagogy of teaching and learning, according to the American Heritage dictionary. Its etymology comes from the Latin word “education which means to bring up” But what does that tell us?
It says to me that education is training not learning. Education is the process of instruction aimed at the all round development of boys and girls. Education dispels ignorance. It is the only wealth that cannot be robbed. Learning includes the moral values and the improvement of character and the methods to increase the strength of mind. Education has always been a bitter experience for most of the students… coping with heavy books, homework, boring lectures… a real headache!
Well, in the quote “The roots of education is bitter” points towards the same situation, where children start taking their studies as a burden and start feeling bitter with them. However, it’s their performance in studies that shapes their career… the more they toil and labor… the more sweet fruit (of good job with good income) they get. Hence it is stated that fruit of education is sweet… though the labor is considered as bitter. Generally, at the start of a very young age, children learn to develop and use their mental, moral and physical powers, which they acquire through various types of education. Education is commonly referred to as the process of learning and obtaining knowledge at school, in a form of formal education. However, the process of education does not only start when a child first attends school. Education begins at home.
One does not only acquire knowledge from a teacher; one can learn and receive knowledge from a parent, family member and even an acquaintance. In almost all societies, attending school and receiving an education is extremely vital and necessary if one wants to achieve success. The importance of learning in enabling the individual to put his potentials to optimal use is self-evident. Without education, the training of the human minds is incomplete. No individual is a human being in the working world until he has been educated in the proper sense. Now I’m not saying you’re not a human being without education. The mind was made to be trained and without education, a person is incomplete in that sense. Education makes man a right thinker and a correct decision-maker. It achieves this by bringing him knowledge from the external world, teaching him to reason, and acquainting him with past history, so that he may be a better judge of the present. Without education, man, as it were, is shut up in a windowless room. With education, he finds himself in a room with all its windows open to the outside world. In other words, people who are not educated have less opportunity to do what they want to do.
A person who gets good education will become a more dependable worker, a better citizen, and a stronger consumer. Education and learning are some of the most important processes in today’s society. Today’s youth are tomorrow’s teachers. Another reason would be getting knowledge for life. In life, you simply cannot succeed without having the right frame of mind, preparation and knowledge for spending it. And that is one of the basic reasons that make education so very necessary for all of us. You learn certain things that benefit you in the future. To sum up, it is going to be fair to say that every individual has its own attitude towards education. For some people education seems to be an obligation, even a burden, for some others it is the meaning of life while for the rest; it can be a means to achieve some higher goals! But there is no doubt, education is the most powerful tool that has a certain impact on our lives and it’s very true that the root of education is bitter but its fruit is very delicious.
