Pakistan, US coming closer following start of new term of Obama

ISLAMABAD,: The bilateral relations between Pakistan and the United States of America have been improving after the start of fresh term of President Obama.

A number of direct interactions have been started and the diplomats from both the sides are willing to improve and enhance these ties based on mutual respect and mutual trust.

In the recent development, US Secretary of State John Kerry telephoned Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar on last evening and it is his first ever telephone call to any foreign minister from Asia.

During this telephonic contact, they expressed satisfaction on the progress in Pak-US relations that has been made during the past few months and looked forward to more intensive engagement in future in this regard.

John Kerry, while thanking the Foreign Minister, reaffirmed the desire of the US Government to forge even closer relations with Pakistan in future and assured her of more stronger coordination and cooperation from American side.

The American leadership has also acknowledged the completion of full five-year tenure by any democratically elected government in Pakistan and John Kerry also congratulated Hina Rabbani Khan on completion of five-year term.

Secretary Kerry also accepted Foreign Minister’s invitation to visit Pakistan at his earliest convenience.     Hina Rabbani Khar during this telephonic conversation told John Kerry said she is looked forward to closely working with him to further expand the multi-faceted relations between the two countries.

She expressed confidence that the relations between Pakistan and the United States will continue to move on the positive trajectory in future.

She also expressed the hoped that with his deep understanding of the region and extensive knowledge of global dynamics, Secretary Kerry would make a significant contribution to further strengthening bilateral ties.

Foreign Minister Khar and Secretary Kerry also agreed that a peaceful and stable Afghanistan was in the common interest of both Pakistan and the US.

Both the countries have difference of opinion on drone attacks and Pakistan has been protesting on these attacks terming them as counterproductive and violation of its sovereignty.

Pakistan has repeatedly said that it has clear position on drone attacks and it has disadvantage over tactical benefits.

Pakistan considers these attacks also arise the question of violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty.

The US Ambassador to Pakistan Richard Olson also called on the Foreign Minister last months and discussed the overall bilateral relationship and both expressed satisfaction on the positive trajectory in Pakistan-US ties.

They expressed their committed to further build on the recent progress in bilateral ties on the basis of mutual respect and mutual interest.

Discussing the regional situation especially progress in the international efforts for peace and reconciliation in Afghanistan,

Foreign Minister Khar highlighted Pakistan’s contribution in advancing the Afghan-owned and Afghan-led reconciliation process.

The US Ambassador appreciated Pakistan’s positive role and contribution to the cause of regional peace and stability.
