Australian Open 2013: Federer beats home favourite Tomic

Four-time Australian Open champion Roger Federer advanced to the fourth round with a 6-4, 7-6 (5), 6-1 win on Saturday over Bernard Tomic, the last Aussie in the draw.

Federer broke the 20-year-old Tomic’s service in the first game of the match, ending a run of 76 consecutive service games held by Tomic, who won his first ATP tournament last week at the Sydney International.

Federer credited a comeback from 4-1 down in the second set tiebreaker with turning the match against Tomic in his favour.

“I was trying the whole second set,” said Federer. “I had more chances than him. You’ve got to keep trying and believing.

“He played a good match and got the best out of me tonight.”
