Raymond Davis has immunity under Vienna Convention: Senator Kerry

Chairman US Senate Foreign Relations Committee Senator John Kerry on Tuesday reiterated the United States stance that Raymond Davis is a diplomat and under Clause 37 of the 1961 Vienna Convention he has immunity. Both Pakistan and the United States are signataries of the Vienna Convention which provided immunity to all diplomats for the past 50 years, he told a press conference here soon after his arrival. He said the immunity does not mean that Raymond may be released but the issue should not be politicized. “Our department of justice will conduct thorough investigation of the incident despite his immunity,” he added. “I am here to express my deepest regret for this tragic incident and to express the sorrow of the American people to the loss of life that has taken place. We express our sympathies to the families,” he said. The architect of Kerry-Lugar Bill, sanctioning $7.5 billion civilian assistance to Pakistan, urged that there is a dire need for both the governments to work together as both the countries have lot of things in common.
