Junaid picked in view of outstanding tours with Pakistan A: Mohsin

The Swabi-born left-arm quickie Junaid Khan was inducted in the World Cup-bound Pakistan team after consultations with Captain,Coach and Seelection Committee and the youngster has the potential to be good replacement for the injured Sohail Tanvir, Chief Selector Mohsin Hassan Khan explained Wednesday.

Talking with APP, ex-Test opener Mohsin expressed confidence that the 21-year-old left arm pacer Junaid Khan, who had been impressive during the tours of Sri Lanka and the West Indies with Pakistan A, would prove “good prospect” for the team in the ICC Cricket World Cup, starting in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh on February 19.

“We consulated the captain, coach and selection committee before including young Junaid in place of injured Sohail Tanvir,” he said.

The technical committee of the Game’s controlling body International Cricket Council (ICC) has accepted the request of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to replace Sohail Tanvir with Junaid Khan.

“Selectors also considered the names of Tanvir Ahmed, Aziz Cheema before deciding in favour of Junaid Khan,” he said.

Junaid has taken 167 wickets in 35 first-class games after making his debut for Abbotabad against Multan in 2007.

“Junaid is really quick and he moves the ball both ways,” Mohsin Khan said. “Junaid’s past experience of playing in Sri Lanka will prove useful,” he hoped.

PCB medical team comprising Faisal Hayat, Dr Sohail Salim and Dr Riaz Ahmed discussed the fitness of Sohail Tanvir in the light of input received from the Team Management after return of the team from New Zealand, said a PCB statement.

The panel opined that though the recovery from a knee operation was good, during the tour it was observed that quick movements and pickup with weight particularly on the operated knee is hindering Tanvir’s mobility and requires him to take a few extra steps to balance himself before delivering the ball.

The medical team and team management have opined that Sohail Tanvir still required time to attain 100% fitness before he could return to international cricket.

Keeping in view the Medical team’s recommendation, PCB, in consultation with Mohsin Khan inducted Junaid Khan into the squad.
