Govt has not imposed any curb on media: Firdous

Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Dr. Firdous Ashiq Awan has said that the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Government had never imposed any curb on media, rather it had full freedom to report. She said, “We believe in objective journalism and promoting media freedom as it was done by our great leader Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto.”

In an interview, the Minister said the role of media is important in highlighting the issues confronted by the country.

The media should also strive to improve the image of the country in the community of nations, she added.

She said the need for improvement is always there and “I think this should also be done in the information sector as a section of the media has carried reports which were not based on facts.
Responding to a question she said, “National interest of the country should be given first priority and it is the duty of all mediapersons to follow this principle in their reports.”

The Minister said the government would consult with media organisations to make further improvement in the sector.

“I will work hard to bring further improvement in information ministry. The government’s advertisement would be provided purely on merit,” she said.
