Anti-Kadhafi protesters appear to control town: witnesses

Libyan protesters Sunday appeared to control the western city of Az-Zawiyah, where thousands of people demonstrated against Moamer Kadhafi in front of journalists on a guided visit.

Witnesses said the journalists were welcomed by thousands of demonstrators who gathered at Martyrs Square in the city centre, shouting “down with the regime, we want freedom”.

A number of them were armed and some fired into the air.

No Libyan security services were visible in the town, where journalists were taken by the Libyan body in charge of the media, after fighting broke out in Az-Zawiyah last Thursday.
