Shot lawmaker opens eyes for first time: Obama

US President Barack Obama said that lawmaker Gabrielle Giffords had opened her eyes for the first time on Wednesday since she was wounded in an assassination bid by a lone gunman in Arizona.

Obama said he visited Giffords at the University Medical Center and a few minutes after he left her room, and while other members of Congress were still there, “Gabby opened her eyes for the first time.”

“Gabby opened her eyes. So I can tell you she knows we are here. She knows we love her. And she knows that we are rooting for her through what is undoubtedly going to be a difficult journey,” he said.
