Leader of the Opposition in National Assembly Chaudhary Nisar Ali Khan on Monday while strongly criticizing recent price hike of petroleum products, called upon the government to withdraw its decision regarding prices immediately.
Speaking on a point of order, he said it would be a unique people friendly action if the democratic government withdrew its decision regarding petroleum prices.
He said that the opposition from the first day was advising the treasury benches that the democratic government could not flourish without resolving issues confronted by the masses. “The dignity of government and parliament is further enhanced with addressing the people’s issues,’ he observed.
Ch. Nisar said the government never responded to the adjournment motions submitted by the opposition regarding price hike of petroleum products for last three years except its traditional statement that the increase was made by OGRA (Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority).
He said that petroleum sector was a heavily taxed sector in the country and various taxes were being collected on it under heads of sales tax, company margin, and dealer margin and carriage tax.
He suggested that the government as a goodwell gesture withdraw its recent decision and take the house in confidence.
