Hong Kong, Shanghai shares end higher

Hong Kong shares rose 0.99 percent on Tuesday as a rally on the Dow in New York lifted optimism for the new year economic outlook.

Hong Kong’s benchmark Hang Seng Index closed up 232.43 points at 23,668.48 on turnover of 76.39 billion Hong Kong dollars (9.83 billion US).

Chinese shares closed up 1.59 percent, the first session of 2011, as investors played catch-up with regional gains on Monday, dealers said.

The Shanghai Composite Index, which covers both A and B shares, was up 44.57 points at 2,852.65 on turnover of 145.7 billion yuan (22.07 billion dollars).
