Weekly inflation falls by 0.64 percent

The Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI), for the week ended on September 23, for the lowest income group up to Rs.3,000, has registered decrease of 0.64 percent over the previous week.

The SPI for the week under review in the above mentioned group was recorded at 285.72 points as against 287.55 points registered in the previous week, according provisional figures of Federal Bureau of Statistics (FBS).

The weekly SPI has been computed with base 2000-2001=100 covering 17 urban centers and 53 essential items for all income groups and combined.

SPI for the combined group registered negative growth of 0.80 per cent as it declined from 274.36 in the previous week to 272.16 in the week under review.

As compared to the corresponding week of last year, the SPI for the combined group in the week under review witnessed increase of 18.68 percent.

As compared to the last week, the SPI for the income groups ranging from Rs.3001-5000, Rs.5001-12000 and above Rs.12,000 decreased by 0.69 percent, 0.75 percent and 0.73 percent respectively.

During the week under review average prices of 8 items registered decrease, while that of 23 items increase with the remaining 22 items’ prices unchanged.

The items which recorded decrease in their average prices during the week under review included onions, bananas, chicken (farm), tomatoes, potatoes, sugar, LPG (11 kg cylender) and red chillies.

The items which registered increase in their prices included, egg hen (farm), moong pulse (washed), wheat flour (average quality), wheat (average quality), rice (irri-6), firewood, cooked dal, gur, garlic, gram pulse (washed), cooked beef, mustard oil, masoor pulse (washed), mutton, coarse latha, rice basmati (broken), curd, beef, mash pulse (washed), kerosene, vegetable ghee (tin), vegetable ghee (loose) and cooking oil (tin).

The items with no change in their average prices during the week under review included bread plain (mid size), milk (fresh), milk (powdered), salt (powdered), tea (packet), tea (prepared), cigarettes, lawn, voil (printed), shirting, sandal (gents), sandal (ladies), chappal, electrocotu bulb (60wats), match box, washing soap, bath soap, gas charges (up to 3.3719 MMBTU), electricity charges (1-100 unit), petrol, diesel, and telephone local call.
