5 killed in Kashmir protests

Indian police say they have killed five people and wounded 30 others after opening fire on demonstrators defying a curfew in Kashmir and against protesters in neighboring Jammu state.

The deaths Wednesday come two days after 18 protesters and a police officer were killed in street battles across Kashmir, and as Prime Minister Manmohan Singh held meetings in Oew Delhi to try to find a political solution to the violence.

Angered by this week’s death deaths, hundreds of people in Mendhar, a predominately Muslim town in the Jammu region just outside Kashmir and not under curfew have also begun anti-government demonstrators.
