New method of financial assistance to flood victims introduced: NADRA

On the special directives of President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani, the NADRA management has introduced a new system of providing financial assistance to the flood affected people through issuance of Watan Card after having registration of the names of real affectees and issuance of National Identity Cards to them.

This was stated by Deputy Chairman of NADRA Tarique Malik while addressing a press conference at Mirani House here on Sunday.

He said that to issue the Watan Cards was a dream of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto through registration of citizens of the country as per the concept of PPP’s founder chairman Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, who introduced the system of National Identity Cards (NICs) in 1973 which was later also adopted in other countries in order to identify their citizens worldwide.

He said that a financial assistance of Rs 20000 would be provided to the real flood affected people at Union Council and Deh level as a first instalment while the other financial aid would be provided to the affectees by ATM system from the partner bank UBL through Watan Cards, he added.

Deputy Chairman NADRA informed that according to a survey by NADRA, more than 752000 affectees have been registered at 2410 relief camps in upper Sindh, who would be provided Watan Cards after entry of their registration in the database.

All other people affected by the calamity of flood in Sindh would also be registered and CNIC cards would be issued to those who do not yet possess their CNIC and duplicate CNIC cards would be issued free of cost against the cards lost during the flood.

He said that financial assistance would be provided to the head of a family who is married.

He said 55 mobile registration teams have been deputed to register the names of the affectees and issue them their CNIC cards without any cost within a week’s time.

Replying to a question the Deputy Chairman NADRA said that those affectees who were not registered at relief camps should submit their applications to NADRA management concerned for registration of their names as the affectees in NADRA data base.

He assured to continue the Watan Card process till the last affectee of the affected area is facilitated.

In this regard more than 18 registration vans have also been arranged from Punjab province for helping NADRA functionaries in issuance of National Identity Cards to the affectees in Sindh.

Later Chairman of District Relief Committee Shikarpur and MNA, Aftab Shahban Mirani who was the chief guest performed the launch ofWatan Cards distribution at a function organised by DCO Shikarpur Saeed Ahmed Mangnejo at the Public School here.

NADRA Deputy Chairman Tarique Malik and Director General Khalid Khan apprised the participants about the system of issuance of Watan Cards and the process to register the names of the flood affectees in order to enable the affectees to get themselves registered with NADRA management concerned so that Watan Cards could be issued to them without delay.

Tarique Malik further said that 1000 applications are being processed daily by NADRA management at its camp set up at Public School, Shikarpur.

According to him, 33000 computerised national identity cards have been issued by NADRA during the last week in Sindh while 84% of the adult persons have been registered in upper Sindh. Besides, eight crore NIC cards have been issued in the country so far, he added.

The two NADRA officials however advised the married persons to get their Computerised National Identity Cards made with the inclusion of their wives and other family members, as the head of a family.

On the occasion MNA Aftab Shahban Mirani and Sindh Minister for Local Bodies Agha Sirajuddin Khan Durani welcomed the NADRA officers and addressed the function.

Sindh Minister Agha Sirajuddin Durani said that the Sindh Government was formulating solid policies and is determined to utilise all the legal and moral resources for the proper rehabilitation and due relief to the flood affected people in District Shikarpur and other affected parts in the province of Sindh without any discrimination.

He called upon the opposition leaders to avoid doing negative politics of agitation against the present elected coalition government and come forward to join hand with the government for the relief and rehabilitation of the affectees who are presently in great trouble.

Sindh Housing Minister Agha Taimoor Khan, Special Assistant to the Sindh CM, Agha Arsallan, DCO Shikarpur Saeed Ahmed Mangnejo, DPO Abdul Hameed Khoso and other district officers and notables participated in the function.
