Indian PM appeals for calm after Ayodhya verdict

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday appealed for calm after a court ruling on the disputed holy site in the town of Ayodhya that has triggered deadly Hindu-Muslim riots in the past.

“My appeal to all sections of the people is to maintain peace and tranquility and to show respect for all religions and religious beliefs in the highest traditions of Indian culture,” he said in a statement.

The statement added the judges’ ruling, which divided the plot between Hindus and Muslims, ordered that neither group could alter the site until the Supreme Court had heard appeals lodged by leaders from both religions.
