The Pakistan Textile Exporters Association (PTEA) has requested Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani to send a high level delegation comprising the Foreign Minister, the Commerce Minister, the Textile Minister and secretaries of federal ministries to European Union (EU) countries to convince EU member countries to include home textiles and knitted garments in duty-free access being offered to Pakistani exports in EU markets.
In a statement issued here on Saturday, Chairman PTEA Khurram Mukhtar and Vice Chairman Sohail Pasha said that leading European countries had shown willingness to accord duty free access to Pakistani exports to mitigate economic problems of Pakistan and it was high time that the Commerce Minister, the Textile Minister and secretaries of the ministries should visit European countries which were expressing reservations in granting duty free market access to Pakistani exports.
They said opportunity was knocking on the door and it was imperative on part of the government to avail it.
They said that with direct and personal approach, the government can turn unfavourable circumstances into most favourable.
They said home textiles and knitted garments were mainstay of our export items, being 40 percent of total textile exports of the country.
This is high time that other EU member states should be convinced to adopt a favourable attitude towards Pakistan in its forthcoming meeting.
It is highly imperative that Pakistani officials should launch a vigorous campaign for it and the Prime Minister should provide necessary funds for this high level delegation, they demanded.
