Police found two powerful mines and hand grenades at a low-budget hostel in the Sri Lankan capital on Wednesday, officials said.
A bomb disposal unit defused the two mines and the three grenades discovered in Colombo’s Wellawatte area where minority Tamils are concentrated, police said. There were no immediate reports of arrests.
The government has blamed Tamil Tiger rebels for bomb attacks in the capital and elsewhere.
The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam have been fighting for an independent homeland. The 35-year old ethnic conflict has claimed more than 60,000 lives.
